- Author was a scientific tinkerer from very childhood when he was 11-12. He liked Radios and experimented with it. He started repairing radios(started with an offer to fix a radio at a hotel run by his aunt which he didn't know) and later electrical equipments later due to this scientific enthusiasm. RFP had persistence which he called Puzzle drive. Once he got a puzzle, he can't get off without solving it. This got him a reputation in MIT.
- In the 2nd chapter, RFP tells us the experience he had while working as a helper boy in his aunt's hotel. Sometimes he was table-cleaner, sometimes server, sometimes vegetable cutter, sometimes Desk clerk, etc. Regardless of what he was doing, he always tried to innovate the way of work. Like he made a kit of knife held at 45 degrees to cut String beans(which didn't end well since he cut his fingers during demonstration after successfully using it for sometime, taking away any chance of improvement), also while working as a desk clerk he tried to innovate the Telephone switchboard system, not technically, but instead trying to know which line is connected without going near the switchboard. However, when his aunt once used the system, she was all confused what the whole paper crap was. So RFP says, I learned there that innovation is a very difficult thing in the real world.
