Pg.13 It is the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.
Pg.13 When you really want something, the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.
Pg. 18 But if you give in to the fear and turn your back on your Personal Legend, then this dream will abandon you. Over time, as you settle for mediocrity, the dreams you had when you were younger will vanish.
Pg. 23 A musician must make music, an artist must pain, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be. We may call this need 'self-actualization'. Chapter-1 from "The Alchemist" by Paul Coelho
- Inspired from the book "The Alchemist" by Paul Coelho.
- Santiago is a young boy from Spain who begins his journey from being a Shepherd to following his "Personal Legend" that is going to Egyption Pyramids.
- During this pursuit he faces serveral hurdles facing choice everytime to continue or stay put going back to the old life. He choses to continue.
- Everyone of has a Personal calling ("Personal Legend") which our hearts tell us. But the more we ignore it, the more the heart's voice gets diminished, and vanish at last.
- Lesson is-
- We all have a personal legend that if fulfilled will lead to a happier life.
- Fear hold us back. During the pursuit of Legend, we will be constantly confronted to the choice of staying put where we are and hence accepting the mediocrity or following our heart in the direction of Personal legend.
- There is no shortcut to Gold(hence the name "Alchemist", that is turning the present situation to better one by following heart's direction, just like the Philosopher's stone turn things to Gold). We need to take necessary steps with required boldness to find our treasure.
Chapter-2 from "Peak" by Chip Conley
- The foundation of Masolw's work is his "Hiearchy of needs"-
These can be further grouped together as- 1. Basic needs : Physiological Needs, Safety needs 2. Psychological needs: Love+ belonging+ Esteem 3. Self-fulfulment: Self Actualization
Chapter-3 from "Life in half a second" by Matthew Michaelwicz
- Planet Earth is 4.5 billion years old. Homosapiens emerged 2,00,000 years ago. If history of Earth was compressed in just 1 year, then modern humans would have only been here for 23 minutes. And on this time scale, our entire life would amount to half a second. In planet time, that's all we've got. Just half a second.
- When we are young, we are impatient to grow up. But when adulthood arrives, reality kicks in. We discover that 'this' freedom we were waiting for is a bit of a sham. Instead, we're paying bills and surviving in jobs that most of us don't care about.
- Tragedy is not that we only have half a second. The real tragedy is that we waste it.
- The only way to make the most of that half a second is by being clear on what we want.
- Successful people get what they want out of life because they know what they want.
- Reticular Activating System- The filtering system of human brain to eliminate Nonsense. It has kept our species alive and away from extinction by allowing us to focus on food sources, mating opportunities, things that are familiar and safe, and things that are potential threats.
- 5 Keys to fulfillment-
- Clarity- People don't fail because they set small goals. They fail because they don't aim at all. Taking aim and setting a goal has this unique power of getting your brain to filter out all the irrelevant information and concentrate on the essentials.
- Desire
- Belief Story of Roger Bannister- An oxford student and gifted runner. At 1952 Olympics, he finished 4th, just missing out a medal. The next year he set the goal to be the first man to run a mile in under 4 minutes. He publicly announced his goal and trained like never before. On May 6th, 1954, he recorded an offical time of 3:59:3. The title "first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes" was his. But just 6 weeks later, another bloke broke the barrier too. Over the following months and years, dozens of runners from around the world did the same. Today, the 4 minute mile is commonplace. You could basically walk a mile in four minutes now. How did it other people also achieved it just after Roger Bannister did it? Only one thing changed over time: Belief.
- Knowledge- Understanding all options- the risks and rewards of each potential pathway. Getting to any goal is infinitely easier once we know how.
- Action- You must take action.
Chapter-4 from "The slight Edge" by Jeff Olson
Concisely, doing a little thing each day has compounding effect, whether we are doing little damage to health everyday, or doing exercise daily, we will get the compounding effect.
Chapter-5 from "How to change" by Katy Milkman
How to change? We have 3 obstacles to overcome- 1. Laziness 2. Impulsivity - We are impulsive as species. We opt for fun over boring. To overcome the obstacle of impulsivity that can block us from change, we need to find ways to inject a little enjoyment into our desired activities. 3. Inertial
Chapter-6 from "Beyond Order" by Jordan Peterson
