What is ghost time
- Ghost time refers to time which we can't recall. For example, we can recall a specific conversation during our last vacation, but we can't recall what videos or anything specific we saw during our last week 12 hours of phone scrolling session. This is due to the absence of focused attention.
- Our brain creates sense of time by weaving together moments of focused attention like beads on a necklace. But while using phones, our brain switches attention every few seconds, like watching notification, videos, etc. As per MIT Neuroscientists, our brain needs 23 seconds to engage with any new piece of information, but average person switch attention in phones every 6 to 8 seconds. He gives an example by asking us to try to remember what we ate , our conversation etc in our last vacation. We can do it. But now try to remember what we looked at during last scrolling session.
- There are two processing- Active and passive. But phones have created third type "Fragmented processing" where are brain starts but never finishes its natural memory creation cycle. That's why people in the age group of 20s or 30s are experiencing what happened only to Elderly. The machinery of our brain is overwhelmed by fragmentation.
Solution
Instead of fragmenting your attention, Create Temporal bookends. There are clear start and stop points that let our brain complete its natural processing cycle. - Choose 3 specific videos to watch. - Read exactly 5 posts. - Spend a defined 15 mins on messages.
